CODEX ONBOARD RECORDER RECORDING ARRIRAW 2160p Rev10.01.2012 PAGE 2

The Productionmetadata field is the only significant field. Here you should enter the name of your production
(usually in UPPERcase). MXF file deliverables will use this to set the Avid Bin name.
Menu: SETUP->SLATE (SLATE SETUP”)
This menu defines the naming conventions for a production. These rules are usually decided in advance of a
shoot, in consultation with Editorial and Post Production departments. Expert users may choose to customise
these rules, but the preset default rules have been carefully crafted to be suitable for the vast majority of
shoots. Press the Nextbutton of the Control Panel to move through the presets for Shot Naming Ruleand
Roll Naming Ruleon the SETUP>Slate menu.
There are two basic ways to work: Onboard only, or Onboard/SxS combined.
If using an Onboard only workflow then all deliverables will be generated from the Codex Datapack, and these
naming rules may be used:
Shot Naming Rule: {Scene}-{Take}_{r}
Roll Naming Rule: {SourceId}{Diskpack}
If using an Onboard/SxS workflow then elements of the naming of media on the SxS cards and the Codex
Datapack needs to match. In this case there are presets on the Codex Onboard which should be used in
order to gather this information from the HD-SDI stream.
Shot Naming Rule: {AlexaTake}_{AlexaReel} or {AlexaSxSName}
Roll Naming Rule: {AlexaReel}
For the conform stage of a project the Reel, Take and Timecode information from the ProRes media will be
used. The Shot Naming Rulechoice is therefore optional - the {AlexaTake}_{AlexaReel} option gives
more concise names, while the {AlexaSxSName} option gives longer names which exactly match the SxS
ProRes files.
Note: The {AlexaSxSName} contains the date. This is generated by the Onboard from its internal clock, since
the date is not currently passed in the video stream. Therefore its important to check the Onboard clock
matches the Alexa if this metadata is to be used. The Onboard time and date can be set from the SETUP-
>Date/Time menu.
Note: When on set, the take number only increments when a recording has been started on the Alexa, so
whilst in E-E the take on both the camera display and the Onboard refers to the previous rather than the next
recording.
Menu: SETUP->SOURCE (SOURCE SETUP”)
For a typical 2D camera shoot, the only important setting on this page is Source ID. This is usually set to be
the camera identification letter, the default being “A”. It is important that each Onboard on a production uses a
different Source ID, so that Editorial can differentiate between them. The Source Namemetadata is sent by
the Alexa.
Source Name: ARRI Alexa
Source ID: A
Serial No: [Note: no need to manually fill in because the Onboard automatically detects the Alexa serial
number]
It is possible to specify a unique identifier for each video channel. This feature is useful when multiple cameras
are connected to a single Codex Onboard recorder (e.g. for stereo 3D), but is not important when using one
camera per Codex Onboard. When using one recorder per camera it is fine to leave the Channel IDs set to the
default V?pattern.
Channel ID V1: V1
Note: The value of the SETUP->VIDEO->Channelsmenu item dictates how many Channel ID V?fields are
shown on this page.
Menu: SETUP->GPI (GPI SETUP”)
It is possible to start/stop the Codex Onboard recorder using the Alexas RECbutton.
Set Record Triggerto SDItrigger recording from the camera and/or if you wish to synchronise with SxS
recording. Set Record Triggerto GPIif you wish to use a custom electrical trigger (e.g. Preston control), or
Noneif you intend to use the RECORD/STOP buttons on the recorder to start/stop recording.
Note: the Holdbutton on the Control Panel should be engaged when using the SDI record trigger from ARRI
Alexa, otherwise the Stopbutton will still be active during recording and takes could be cut by accidentally
pressing the button.
Record Trigger: GPI or SDI or None
The other menu items are specific to GPItriggering:
GPI Polarity: Low or High
GPI Type: Latching or Momentary
